A project funded by a Chinese company named Goldwind has the aim of setting the first large-scale hybrid wind and solar farm in Australia. The hybrid park will be located near Canberra together with the existing Gullen Range wind farm and is expected to produce 22,000 MWh of electricity in the first year of operation; this amount of energy could supply about 3,000 homes.
The main objective of this hybrid park is to create a more reliable source of energy by saving money in construction and in connectivity costs. With this two types of green energy generators the carbon print will be reduced significantly and since both energy sources are complementary, they can work at different times of the day and year.
The project is still under construction but it is expected to be complete by July of 2017, and certainly it would be a very ambitious and positive project. How successful it will be, we do not know yet but for now it emerges as a good sustainable alternative to be implemented in other countries.
