By first sight it is not, since for many years there have been damage of important ecological spots such as high-biodiversity forests, which were cut to make plantations without taking into account their significance and role in the nearby ecosystems.
However, a new study came up with the idea to change the actual situation and to make this activity more sustainable. Some scientists from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis who were the first to map land suitable for palm oil production on a global scale, while taking into account environmental and climate considerations found that nearly 19.3 million hectares of land globally are suitable for palm oil cultivation which could potentially be available in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia.
Both Social and Environmental aspects are important to have a sustainable crop. Firstly, because it becomes a source of income for those communities that live on unfortunate conditions, and secondly, because some environmental standards need to be achieved.
Something very important said by the authors is that banning is not the right solution, instead both parts, the producers and consumers should work together to improve the chain of distribution being aware of the origin of the oil, who is growing it, how and where.
